IL CAPPELLAIO MATTO

Il Cappellaio Matto (Mad Hatter) è un personaggio inventato da Lewis Carroll apparso per la prima volta nel 1865 in Le avventure di Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie e che ricompare con il nome di Hatta in Attraverso lo Specchio e quel che Alice vi trovò (1871). Come per tutti i suoi personaggi, Carroll non ne dà una precisa descrizione fisica, ma si sofferma più sul comportamento del personaggio e sul suo modo di relazionarsi con Alice. Il personaggio nasce dall'antico detto inglese "Essere matti come un cappellaio" (Mad as a hatter) che derivava dall'usanza di utilizzare il mercurio nella lavorazione dei cappelli, sostanza che aveva effetti rovinosi sulla salute mentale degli artigiani cappellai. La leggenda vuole inoltre che Carroll si sia ispirato a tale Theophilius Carter, estroso inventore di orologi bizzarri, che usava portare un cilindro in testa. Dal canto suo, John Tenniel per disegnarlo si ispirò a Benjamin Disraeli, che aveva già caricaturizzato in una delle sue scenette.

The Mad Hatter (Hatter Mad) is a character invented by Lewis Carroll first appeared in 1865 in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and reappears with the name of Hatta in Through the Looking Glass and what Alice Found There (1871 ).
